Memoire Online - Problématique de l'eau et de l'assainissement en milieu scolaire en République du Bénin: cas de la ville de Porto Novo

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible interaction between the drinking water, the environment and the health in school environment in the Porto-Novo town.

We survey school users such as the students, the teachers, the food sellers, the health personal and the school administrative authorities. One hundred fifty persons were interrogated and were from three categories (students, sellers and school administration authorities including the teachers and the health personal).

All the students interrogated use water of the sellers for drinking, 60% had not idea about the quality of water they drink, 36% think that the containers of water is dirty, 48% of students observe that the kit-case is dirty, 76% were ill once a year and 46% suffer from the diarrhoea and the vomit.

Fifty six per cent of the administrative authorities including teachers and the health staff confirmed the presence of a water tap in the schools, 78% of them recognize that student drink food sellers' water in their schools, 68% denounce the unsanitary in schools. As for sellers 46% don't protect water container, 84% use the same bowl to serve water to many students, 66% recognized the unsanitary of students' restoration areas.

The physicochemical analysis made at IMSP and bacteriological analysis achieved in DHAB laboratory at Akpakpa (Cotonou) permitted to appreciate the quality of water served at school.

The results of physicochemical analysis interpretation reveal that all water samples are soft water with a small quantity of free residual chlorine; all these samples contain nitrates with variable concentrations.

High concentration of nitrate determined in of three samples gives information about faecal contamination.

The results of bacteriological analysis show that water samples are contaminated with common germs and pathological germs mainly E. Coli responsible for fresh faecal contamination.

These micro-organisms found in drinkable water have shown and lack of hygiene in school environment which are factors responsible for diseases as malaria, diarrhoea, registered by health centres of Porto-Novo town.

It is important measures to take to protect water, sanitation and hygiene in school area to preserve the health of school users.
