Plusieurs initiatives diplomatiques sont tentées pour y mettre fin. Le Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies adopte des résolutions favorisant la tenue d'un cessez-le-feu. Celle qui suit date du 20 juillet 1987. Il faudra cependant attendre le 20 août 1988 avant que les hostilités ne cessent, quelques semaines après l'adoption d'une autre résolution des Nations unies.
