ABSTRACT
Holarrhena floribunda (G. Don) Durand and Schinz an
Apocynaceae was commonLy used in veterinarian an human traditionaL therapeutic
to fight against abortion and infertiLity. The aim of the present study is to
verify its utiLization by evaLuating progesterone activity by deciduaL reaction
and estrogenic activity by uterotrophics assays. Research was preLiminary made
by HPLC and RIA on the presence of progesterone in three aqueous extractions :
macerate, decoction and infusion. Safety measures of utiLizations have been
evaLuated by acute toxicity.
ResuLts have reveaLed as much in HPLC as in RIA, the presence
of the progesterone in the Leaves of H. floribunda. However the
quantity of progesterone is more higher in the macerate extract than in
decoction and in infusion extract.
The vaLues of DL50 and index security are respectiveLy 1509
mg/kg and 10,3. These vaLues show an average toxicity and a great
manoeuvrabiLity of the macerate aqueous extracts of Leaves of H.
floribunda administered subcutaneousLy.
The research of progesterone activity shows progesterone
potentiaLisation by the macerate aqueous extracts of Leaves of H.
floribunda. This potentiaLisation showed an increase of the weight of the
deciduoma and the number of spots simiLar to bLastocysts impLantation sites
when the extract and the pure progesterone were administered simuLtaneousLy.
On the other hand the macerated aqueous extracts of Leaves of
H. floribunda showed an estrogenic activity. This activity firstLy
showed an increase of weight of wet and dry uterus and vaginaL opening of rats.
SecondLy by an increase of the totaL protein and the gLucose LeveL and a
decrease of the LeveL of choLesteroL in uterine horns.
In concLusion, the potentiaLisation of the progesterone by
macerate aqueous extracts of Leaves of H. floribunda and their
estrogenic activity justify their utiLization in traditionaL veterinary
therapeutic. H floribunda contains some phytoestrogens, that couLd be
beneficiaL in the fight against cancers, cardiovascuLar diseases and some
affections of menopausaL women Like osteoporosis, if thorough studies are
made.
