EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This study seeks to assess the level of knowledge and
practices of the population of Bujovu quarter on the importance of using
hygienic latrine.
The general question is: What is the level of knowledge and
practices of the population of Bujovu quarter on the importance of using
hygienic latrine?
The following specific questions have been taken into account:
1. What is the level of knowledge of the population of Bujovu
quarter on the importance of using hygienic latrine?
2. What are the practices of the population of Bujovu quarter
on the importance of using hygienic latrine?
To answer the questions of aur work, the following assumptions
have been made:
1. The level of knowledge of the population of Bujovu quarter
on the importance of using hygienic latrine would been average.
2. The population of Bujovu quarter adopt good practices
encouraging the use of hygienic latrine.
This study has following obgectives:
1. To assess the level of knowledge of the population of
Bujovu quarter on the importance of using hygienic latrine.
2. Determine the practices of the population of Bujovu quarter
on the importance of using hygienic latrine
We used quantitative and qualitative data to obtain aur
results, the probabilistic sampling of the systematic type was drawn from 364
household managers in the Bujovu quarter and a survery questionnaire was
administered.
The results from this study are the following:
More than half of respondents, 83,7% say they have heard about
hygienic latrines, and 16% say the opposite. All of those who have claimed
either 100% said that a hygienic latrine can not contribute to the
proliferation of disease vectors, 62,6% say because she is clean, 33,8% say
because she does not attract the disease vectors, 3,6% say they don't know.
But also 92,3% of respondents claim to have knowledge about diarrheal diseases
and 7,7% say the opposite. But then all the totality of those who said either,
100% say that a hygienic latrine can contribute to the absence of odors. But
then 66,8% say that cleaning the latrine regularly can contribute to the
absence of odors, 29% say using cleaning product, 4,2% say that by channeling
odors into a pipe. But also all of the respondents say that a hygienic latrine
can contribute to a healthy environment. But then 46,2% say that by protecting
against diseases, 32,4% say that by ovoiding odors, and 16,5% say that
ovoiding flies, and 4,9% say that ovoiding the proliferation of rats.
Whith regard to the practices of population of Bujovu quarter
on the importance of using hygienic latrine, the results are as follows:
More than half of respondents, 68,4% say that they do not
regularly clean their latrines and 31,6% say the opposite. Among those who
claimed, 37,3% use water only. But then 23,6% clean their latrinesto ovoid
flies, 29,5% to ovoid odors, 46,9% to protect from disease, 0,86% wear the
glove to clean, 0,86% wear the nose cover to clean and 98,3% do not use ony
proctetive equipment. While 75,5% of those who denied say they do not clean
their latrines regularly 39,3% for lack of time, and 24,5% for lack of water.
But also 60,7% surveys claims to have already emptied at least once their
latrines was at the base of environmental pollution, 33,5% say the opposite.
45,6% say that there was spread of bad odors following the emptying of
latrines, 54,4% say that there has been proliferation of flies, 59,6% of
respondents say that there are people in their communities who do not use the
hygienic latrine and 40,4% say the opposite. 65% of those who say that the lack
of means is the basis of the existence of people who do not use the hygienic
latrine, 35% say that it is because of the lack of will.But then 60,4% of the
respondents mentioned the risk of contacting the disease as a consequence of
not using the hygienic latrine, 39,6% mentioned the risk of multiplication of
disease vectors, but also 31% says that they wash their hands after using
latrines and 69% say the opposite, 39,8% of those who wash their hands use
water and soap, 17,8% claim that the benefit of handwashing protects aigainst
diarrheal disease and 13,3% speaks of prevention of dirty hand disease. 47,3%
of the respondents mentioned diarrhea as a result of not washing their hands
after using latrines, 28% talking about cholera, 19% talking about urinary
tract, and 5,8 talking about typhoid fever.
In view of the results, the following suggestions were
made:
1. To the population of Bujovu quarter :
· To respect latrine hygiene rules in order to prevent
the spread of diseases.
· For those who do not wash their hands regularly after
using latrines to start washing their hands as this way reduce the risk of
contracting the diseases.
2. To health professionals:
· To continue to strengthen health education to residents
about the importance of using hygienic latrines, while garanting hygiene
equipment.
3. To government:
· To raise the population of Bujovu quarter awareness
through community relays in the adoption of good hygienic practices. But also
to provide water in this quarter because some respondents say they do not
regularly clean their latrines for lack of water.
