SUMMARY
The Port of Kribi: strenghth or threats to nomination
of Lobé Falls on the World Heritage List of UNESCO and to the local
communities identity?
Our personal topic deals with the construction issue of a port
industrial complex near a cultural site which folder is in process of
inscription on UNESCO List of cultural heritage : cultural landscape of Lobe
waterfalls. And the question that arises is: What is the direct impact of this
proximity and also what is its eventual future as world heritage? It is a site
that has cultural and natural components interfering each other through an
almost symbiotic interaction, because the nature is not just a physical
element, but an entity much more dynamic which influences different aspects of
local population?s life, through its traditions, its culture, its essence and
identity. This site has physical, but also intangible values which allowed to
tender penny of outstanding universal value allowing it to be ranked on the
list of UNESCO, but also to be the subject of an application by the Ministry of
Culture in 2006. However, after the development of the Management Plan, the
site was already in full preparation of its nomination process, it has to be
interrupted because of the proposed implementation of the industrial complex
port of Kribi. This project saw from a distance a strong threat for the folder,
but also to the integrity of the site, where the decision of the MINAC to stop
the record. But so far the CIPK is already in effect and gave birth to its
first phase, which is the PAK, autonomous Port of Kribi and to this day, the
situation seen in real mode seems more so desperate for the integrity of the
site, and even less for the nomination because the threats of yesterday have
become the strengths and weaknesses of front of opportunities. Although subject
to condition, the protection of this site may eventually become an imminent
example of conservation and sustainable management of a cultural site a
permanent industrial threat.
