ABSTRACT
Africa has traditionally been concerned with the use of
psychotropic substances, but well controlled, socially and individually, for
ritual or therapeutic purposes. Some of these substances, such as kola, have
played an important economic and cultural role as a driver of cross-border
trade in Africa (Cesoni 1992). The agricultural sector is very important for
the improve of Benin economy (PSRSA, 2016). The main research question is how
the use of psychotropic substances by farmers (human determinants of
production) affects agricultural performance in Northern Benin? The overall
objective is therefore to make an analysis of the actors, mechanisms and impact
of the use of psychotropic substances in agriculture in Northern Benin. The
work was carried out in the municipalities of Bembérékè,
Banikoara and Malanville. A total of 117 producers were surveyed in a reasoned
manner. Direct observation, individual and group interviews were also conducted
with 10 (State Decentralized Structures) through a maintenance guide.
Interviews are conducted on the basis of a survey questionnaire and a guide.
The methodology used is more qualitative than quantitative. SPSS software was
used. The results of our work indicate that regulatory measures on psychotropic
drugs present limitations in view of current history and social realities
through the low consideration of provisions relating to the abuse of social
psychotropics. This situation is reflected by the low synergy of action of
inter- and intra-actor, the absence of projects/programs, the weakness of local
investments and technologies for better control of psychotropic drugs. There is
also the lack of a surveillance or vigilance system, necessary to limit the
problems of abuse and dependence caused by psychotropic substances using. This
situation denotes the abandonment of the sector by these measures and even more
of the farmer; human production factor. The forms of use of psychotropic drugs
are self-medication, misuse, dependence on psychotropic drugs motivated by the
satisfaction of primary needs and esteem. The main effects are public health
problems, image and social esteem degradation, food insecurity, poor
agricultural performance, etc.; leading to chaos, poverty and a brake on the
sustainable development of the agricultural sector.
