Abstract:Since the 1990s and the fall of the Iron Curtain, the Baltic region has been undergoing a full geopolitical reorganisation. The major factor in the new deal is a process of intense and fast regionalisation. This regionalisation is often presented as the revival of old time historical links - the emergence of a new Hanseatic League. The cities of the region seem to be rediscovering both the material and the non-material heritage of the mediaeval Hanseatic League and to be trying to establish it as a resource, in order to create economic, political and institutional networks. The idea here is to recreate a long-lost unity. However, we can wonder if and to what extent the patrimonisation of the Hanseatic heritage plays a role in the process of regionalisation which seems to be developing around the Baltic region. We can also wonder if and to what extent regionalisation plays a part in the patrimonisation of the Hanseatic heritage. A study of the cities of Bremen, Gdansk and Riga can help find tentative answers to these questions. Bremen, a city of the former western block, Gdansk and Riga, cities of the former eastern block, follow contrasted logics. However, the economic and political actors in these three cities, both in the private and the public sectors, seem to sometimes justify their regional policies through references to their Hanseatic past. Does this only appear in speeches or representations, or does it really lead to a real policy of space management? Is the newly rediscovered Hanseatic Leage but a reborn myth, or has it created a real network between countries in the Baltic region? Is there such a space as a "new Hanseatic League»? 95 |
