ABSTRACT
This topic discusses social and economic risks assessment in
medicines stock management; here is MSF Holland - Goma concern. A long this
study, we noticed that MSF Holland has lost a lot of drugs that have expired
during the year of 2011, which cost enough in terms of drugs loss, time and
money, to support the destruction and to pay tax costs. This pushed us to ask
this main question:
"Why does MSF Holland Goma recorded huge losses in his drugs
stock management?»
To this we added three specific questions which are:
1. What are causes of social and economic risks concerning drugs
management at MSF Holland Goma?
2. What can be consequences of poor drugs stock management
within this organization?
3. What can MSF Holland Goma do to avoid these risks?
In answering these questions, we made the following
assumptions:
1. Main assumption
«The huge financial losses recorded by MSF Holland Goma in
his drugs stock
management in 2011 could be due to lack of medical stock
manager's professionalism
and to the security degradation in the MSF intervention
areas.»
2. Specifics assumptions
In additional to this main assumption, we thought that:
1. Social and economic risks causes in drugs stock management
could have a link to the non-respect of environmental condition and technical
procedures while receiving and handling drugs.
2. Consequences of Social and economic risks in drug management
can lead to drugs expiry, to high taxes cost to support destruction of obsolete
products and to the monetary loss within the organization.
3. To avoid any loss, MSF Holland Goma could be affecting a
competent staff in charge of monitoring and evaluation for their drugs system
management.

As methodology, we used a mixed approach that has allowed us to
analyze qualitatively and quantitatively data. We processed like this:
1. The evaluative method helped us to sort out social and
economic risks relating to drug management.
2. The direct and participatory survey allowed us to assess and
observe risks that face drugs in MSF Holland Goma's medical stocks.
3. The Comparative method allowed us to compare different
manufacturing dates to expiring dates relating to specific drugs, in order
state the discrepancy and conclude to risk.
By the end, we concluded that causes for social and economic
risks within drug management in MSF Holland, was linked on non-respect of
environmental conditions and technical procedures while receiving drugs and
handling drug stock. So this situation leads to such consequences: discarded
drug, drug expiry, high cost while destroying expiry drugs, money loss within
the organization.
According to our survey result, we noticed that 23 drugs which
represents 46,96% of our sample was Antibacterians and was constituting the
major part of drug in risk such as 40,74% , 10 drugs like 20,40% was
Immunoglobulines and represented 22,22% of drugs in risk.
Finally, we remarked that 27 drugs representing 55,10% of our
sample was in major risk, other 3 drugs representing 6,12% was in minor risk
and only 19 medicines representing 38,77% had a good expiry date. We confirmed
for this reason the assumption that support that MSF Holland Goma could affect
for his stock management a competent staff in charge of monitoring and
evaluation in order to maintain a good drug management system and avoid any
loss of drug and money.
